The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra opened its 2016-2017 season earlier this month with a bravura performance of Mozart’s opera, The Marriage of Figaro. Tuesday night, Itzhak Perlman returned to the MSO as a soloist, and the rest of the season promises equally momentous and musically exciting performances.
But among the galas, the symphony is also performing at far more modest venues, like Bliffert’s Lumber in Riverwest, and Wednesday afternoon at the Holton Youth & Family Center in the Harambee Neighborhood. No tuxedo or ball gown is required to attend.
The Symphony in the Neighborhood program runs through Sunday and is being orchestrated by the Symphony’s assistant conductor, Yaniv Dinur. "They are performing concerts in different places where people are, in grocery stores, in bike shops, in bars and cafes all around," he says.
Dinur says this is something he's wanted to do for quite a while. "Coming here and being able to do it with the Milwaukee Symphony, is kind of like a dream come true, you know, to go out to the community and to meet the audience, and after the concert to talk with them and see what they thought and how they reacted," he says.
