Veteran's Day is a time when we honor veterans, but it's also a time when veterans reflect on their time in the service. They’re not always pleasant memories.
Mark Miller is an associate professor of business at Carthage College. But there was a year he once said he’d never talk about – a year spent as a sergeant on the front lines in Vietnam.
He broke his silence, though, with a memoir of that time, called My Confessions from Vietnam. It's a familiar story. "I always wanted to be a writer, so I kept a journal all the time I was in Vietnam. But when I got home I stuck it in the bottom of a drawer and forgot about it," says Miller.
He was inspired to make his story public during a trip to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C. "I was curious to see if all of them got back safely, and I was shocked to see that one of the people in my squad was killed in Cambodia after we were broken up. And that kind of brought the memories back."
