"Neptune" Uniquely Explores the Challenges of Adolescence

Set in the late 1980s on an island off the coast of Maine, "Neptune" follows the last summer of Hannah Newcombe’s childhood.";

One of the many features of this year's Milwaukee Film Festivalis the Cream City Cinema series, which features films by and/or about Milwaukeeans.

At first glance, the feature Neptune would seem to stand out.  It’s set on an island off the coast of Maine, is directed by Maine native Derek Kimball and features a cast of Mainers. But Milwaukee filmmaker Matthew Konkel co-wrote the script with Kimball and is the producer of the film, which is both a coming-of-age tale and a spiritual journey.

Set in the late 1980s on an island off the coast of Maine, the film follows the last summer of Hannah Newcombe’s, played by Jane Ackermann, childhood. She has lived a sheltered life, raised in a church by a priest. An event leads Hannah to reexamine her life and ambitions.

"On-screen (Jane) just radiates, she just has that natural thing. And as soon as (the director) saw her and saw her audition we just knew immediately that it was her," Matthew Konkel says.
