The oral history and public radio series, StoryCorps, frequently makes the point that “listening is an act of love.” It is probably not a stretch to imagine that the fictional characters who drive writer Liam Callanan’s new book might buy into that idea.
Callanan, who is an associate professor of English at UW-Milwaukee and an occasional Lake Effect essayist is the author of two novels. But his latest title, called Listen, is a collection of stories, which inhabit many different places and eras.
"I still feel like short stories are really concerned with a moment; the moment in particular when everything changes for a character. After that moment, nothing is the same as it was for the character at the core of it," says Callanan.
