One Frame To Tell A Story: Photographs Of People And Poverty

Milwaukeean Chip Duncan is known here and around the country for his documentary filmmaking.

His company, Duncan Entertainment Group, produced a 3-part series on the Reagan presidency that aired on PBS last year.  He’s also produced films on Afghanistan, Haiti and the history of prayer in America.

Duncan is also an accomplished photographer, and a collection of his photography work from Peru and Kenya will be on display during Gallery Night tomorrow in Milwaukee.

Chip Duncan joins Lake Effect's Mitch Teich in the studio to talk about how photography can impact an audience in a way that film can't.

"A lot of times I was trying to use the camera to break down stereotypes. You know, images of people smiling, experiencing joy, became very important to me...now, interestingly, I'm shifting more because I've been doing so much documentation of slums in East Africa," Duncan says. "The images are really not designed to convey the emotional spectrum as much as the experience of poverty."

Audrey is a WUWM host and producer for Lake Effect.
