Paul Sereno is proof that the dinosaurs don’t need to be alive for the adventure to be real.
Sereno is a paleontologist, National Geographic explorer-in-residence, and professor at the University of Chicago. He’s also discovered several new species of dinosaur in places like Mongolia, Morocco, and Niger.
This Thursday, Sereno will be giving a lecture as part of the Milwaukee Public Museum’s Science on Tap series. But before that conversation, he joined Lake Effect to talk about paleontology and his excitement for it.
"I describe my work as adventure with a purpose," he said. "The purpose is pushing back the frontiers of knowledge in some way or another. And the adventure is how you do that, and how you get to it."
"There is nothing I love more than the challenge of the distant corner that has not been visited, the animal that has never been seen," Sereno added. Although his degrees gave a deeper understanding of science, his childhood love for exploring is what drove him to paleontology.
