Celebrating Wisconsin Photographer Julie Lindemann

Update: PhotographerJulie Lindemann died of cancerTuesday.

Original Post, April 22, 2015: Wisconsin is home to a great many world class artists. Among those are the photographers Julie Lindemann and John Shimon, both of whom were born in the state and have made it their professional home.

The two are a couple personally and professionally, and are known asJ. Shimon & J. Lindemann.

Their photographs, of which there are thousands taken over the course of their 30 year career, capture life in the Midwest, and in Wisconsin in particular. The exhibit There’s A Place recently opened at the Museum of Wisconsin Art. The retrospective it offers into the couple's work is all the more poignant because it includes the last photograph the two will take together – Julie’s health is failing and she is in hospice.

"Every photograph is a joint collaboration – really, actually, more than a joint collaboration. It’s a Julie and Johnnie collaboration but then it’s also very much a collaboration with the people in the photographs," says Director of Collections and Exhibitions, Graeme Reid.

There’s a Place: Photographs by J. Shimon & J. Lindemann, is on display through June 7th. The Museum has also published a 120-page color catalogue that reflects Shimon and Lindemann’s thirty-year career. The book is available as a free download on the museum’s website. You can also read more about the exhibit in this month's Milwaukee Magazine piece, "In A Flash."
