Puccini's 'Tosca' Reimagined by Milwaukee's Skylight

skylightmusictheatre.org

Puccini’s Tosca is the very definition of grand opera. Love, betrayal, death and huge, sweeping arias. It’s the kind of show you expect to see on a stage as large as the opera’s score and emotions.

However, the Skylight Opera’s current production of Tosca approaches the piece a little differently including all the passion and music in force, but on a smaller scale to fit into the smaller confines of the Broadway Theatre Center’s Cabot Theatre.

That approach is thanks in great part to Jill Ann Ponasik. You may know her as the artistic Ddrector of Milwaukee Opera Theatre, but she was the stage director for Skylight’s Tosca.

"We wanted to take this big grand thing and kind of keep boiling it down to something that's stronger that is its essence," explains Ponasik. "And the Skylight stage was such a beautiful opportunity to do that."

The Skylight Opera’s production of Tosca runs through October 11th at the Broadway Theatre Center in Milwaukee's Third Ward.
