Shorewood Brings Neighborhood Together Through One Book

shorewoodlibrary.org

Community reads are seemingly everywhere now.  They're a way to boost literacy efforts, spotlight some remarkable writing and even build community.

But the effort underway in Shorewood adds another couple of layers - supporting the state's literary tradition and bringing some local musicians into the fold.

Copies of Wisconsin writer Nickolas Butler's Shotgun Lovesongs have been circulating throughout the Shorewood community for a while now - leading up to next week's intensive set of events and activitiessurrounding the book that includes the Shorewood Lovesongs concert.

Among the people behind the effort are Shorewood librarian Emily Passey and Shorewood High School senior Alberto Kanost. Both join Lake Effect's Mitch Teich to explain how the project started and the effect it has had on the community.

"We definitely wanted to get people reading. We wanted to increase the visibility of the library - and the friends of the library - and we really wanted to bring Shorewood together," Passey says.
