Studying the Svalbard Global Seed Vault

Jon Strelecki
Tom Luljak and Tracey Heatherington

With summer in full swing, the farmlands of Wisconsin are bursting with new crops. A drive across our state reminds us of the richness of Wisconsin’s agriculture industry.

But what if someday a pest or disease invaded farm fields wiping out not only this season’s crops but killing whole varieties of crops?

On this edition of UWM Today, learn about the systems that have been created to preserve seeds that are key to the bio-diversity of our planet. Guest Tracey Heatherington, associate professor of anthropology, has spent the past several years studying the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, located on a remote Norwegian island above the arctic Circle.

Tom Luljak hosted UWM Today on WUWM for more than two decades and is the inaugural host of Curious Campus.
