Tyne Daly Does Whatever She Wants at Renaissance Theaterworks

Renaissance Theaterworks

Tyne Daly has a long connection to Renaissance Theaterworks.

The actress, who was born in Madison into a theatrical family, has been to Milwaukee three times to support the work of the company.

Daly is best-known for her Emmy Award-winning roles on television in the shows Cagney and Lacey and Judging Amy, and to theater audiences for her Tony Award-winning portrayal as Mama Rose in the 1989 revival of Gypsy.  Most recently, she was nominated for a Tony for her part in the newest Terrance McNally play, Mothers and Sons.

Daly is back in Milwaukee on behalf of Renaissance for an evening called Tyne Daly Does Whatever She Wants. It takes place tonight at the Broadway Theater Center.

She joins us first in the Lake Effect studio to talk about her career, what she calls "the business of show," and why she supports the Renaissance's self-described women-centric mission.

"I tell women’s stories," Daly says. "And I don’t think that only women need to hear women’s stories.  I think men need to hear women’s stories, as much as we have listened to men’s stories.  And that balance has not been redressed yet.  So we’re still in a mode of catch-up."
