U.S. Justice Department To Review Dontre Hamilton Case

Erin Toner

Hours after the Milwaukee DA announced he would not press charges, the U.S. Attorney said there will be a federal review of the case.

The Justice Department will determine whether police may have violated Dontre Hamilton's civil rights.

The review will be conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin and the Civil Rights Division.

The Milwaukee Police Department fired officer Christopher Manney for not following protocol in approaching Hamilton as he rested in Red Arrow Park, leading to the fatal shooting in April.

Hamilton's family held a press conference, following the DA's announcement Monday morning, on the steps of Milwaukee's federal courthouse.
