UWM Opera Singer Advances To The Finals In New York Met Auditions

America’s fascination with singing can be seen regularly on TV screens across the country as viewers tune in to American Idol or The Voice

A musical competition will soon be taking place that showcases opera.

The Metropolitan Opera is conducting its annual National Council Auditionswith some of the finest young opera singers in the land. And on stage this year is a UW-Milwaukee student who will be performing in some very elite company at the national semi-finals on March 15, 2015.

UWM Today host Tom Luljak spoke withKathryn Henry, a senior in UWM’s Peck School of the Arts and the person competing at the Met. Also in the studio was Valerie Errante, co-chair of the Voice Area in the Peck School and Lauren Decker, an alumna of the voice program.

Henry was awarded first place in the Upper Midwest Met Opera National Council Auditions. On Saturday, she will performing in Puccini's Sister Angelicaat UWM's Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts.

Since Henry's interview with UWM Today, she has won one of the nine finalist spots of the Metropolitan Opera auditions in New York and will sing this weekend. During the first of several triumphs to the finals, Kathryn spoke with Lake Effect's Bonnie North  about her experience thus far:
