Wisconsin Author Reflects on Impact of Community Reading Event

Organizers of the Shorewood Readsprogram hoped the city-wide shared reading event might help shape the community.

Nickolas Butler’s book, Shotgun Lovesongs, was selected for the community reading program.

Not only did the book impact the community, but also the author.

"I didn’t know whether the book was going to be successful or not when it first came out. But one of my hopes was that it would be well-received in Wisconsin. And so to come to a community like Shorewood and have everybody be really excited about it was pretty cool," says Wisconsin writer Nickolas Butler.

Butler was in town for a series of events in Shorewood, and stopped by Lake Effect to talk about how things have changed for him since the publication of Shotgun Lovesongs:

Butler’s new collection of short stories, Beneath the Bonfire, is due out next Tuesday.
