If the heat has you thinking about getting out to a visit a waterfall close by, Lake Effect contributor Stacy Tornio can offer some suggestions.
It was just a couple of weeks ago that she talked about a more ambitious trip to Niagara Falls, and although Tornio says there's nothing in Wisconsin that really compares, there are still some great spots in the state.
- Mallard Lake in Whitnall Park in Franklin, WI - "Along Mallard Lake there's a small waterfall that's a really short hike...and it's great. It's a great experience and you can climb down a bit to see it," says Tornio. "It's a good one if you're wanting to stay local."
- Appleton - If you are up for a drive, Appleton has numerous falls and rapids.
- Marinette County - Continue north to Marinette County, and you'll find yourself in the "Waterfall Capital of Wisconsin." With not far to drive and a total of 14 falls of all sizes, Tornio suggests "if you have a waterfall fan in your life take them up there...and see how many you can see just in that one county."
- Big Manitou Falls in Pattison State Park - Even further north in the Superior area, a visit to Pattison State Park will take you to a 165 foot tall waterfall. "If you're talking about waterfalls, you have to talk about the highest one in the state," says Tornio. "There's great sandy beaches over there, there's a lake not too far from the falls and it's a good place to visit."
