Most people who consider themselves film buffs have seen or at least know of the classic silent films, Metropolis and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.  But the German Expressionist movement that they were a part of has a much broader sweep than just those two titles.

It wasn’t too long after the Milwaukee Art Museum opened its renovated galleries a year ago that then director Dan Keegan announced his retirement. The intensive, international search for his successor led to the hiring of Marcelle Polednik, who began her tenure there in August.

It’s been a few months since Marcelle Polednik took over as the new director of the Milwaukee Art Museum. But her appointment to such a prominent role in the Milwaukee cultural scene is attracting plenty of attention.

Milwaukee Magazine’s editor, Carole Nicksin, is also a recent addition to the scene, and she had the chance to profile Polednik in the November issue.

With the advent of Instagram, Facebook, Flickr, and other apps, it seems that everyone is a photographer – or are they? It seems that capturing special moments has lost its specialness, but New York-based photographer Penelope Umbrico would disagree.

For the past decade, Umbrico has been sifting through the millions of photographs available online, usually grouped by subject matter. She wants to know why we take and share photographs and what it says about us as humans.

The big news at the Milwaukee Art Museum is that its long-anticipated new addition is about to open, along with the rest of the museum, which was renovated at the same time.  But there is still art to see between now and the grand re-opening on November 24th.

Due to the construction of the Milwaukee Art Museum's new wing, almost all of the museum remains closed the summer. But that doesn’t mean isn't anything to see. In fact, some of the most significant works of art from the late 19th and 20th centuries are on display.

From Salvador Dali to Andy Warhol and lots of artists in between, the Van Gogh to Pollock: Modern Rebels exhibit that is on display through September is like a survey of some of modern art’s greatest hits.

The Milwaukee Art Museum on Thursday unveiled one of its most controversial exhibits. It’s called "Eggs Benedict" and it’s the portrait an artist made of Pope Benedict XVI, out of 17,000 high end condoms.

The goal of the portrait is to spur conversation about stopping the spread of HIV and AIDS. The former pope suggested that condoms were not the answer.

"Eggs Benedict" wasn’t supposed to go on exhibit until November, but Milwaukee Art Museum Director Daniel Keegan says there was so much interest, it pushed up the date.

The traveling exhibit on the Ebony Fashion Fair, now open at the Milwaukee Art Museum, shares an anniversary with the fashion program at Mount Mary University.

Thirteen of the garments on display at the art museum came from Mt. Mary’s historic costume collection. Lake Effect's Bonnie North spoke with the university's dean of the School of Arts and Design, Barbara Armstrong.

The O’Donnell parking garage in downtown Milwaukee is in need of repair, and it’s no secret that some supervisors want the structure off county books. The County Board may vote Thursday on whether to enter into talks with the Milwaukee Art Museum to either buy or lease the property.

For the past year and a half, a group of photographers from the photographic cooperative Magnum Photos has fanned out across America.  The project, Postcards from America, aims to capture the essence of specific places across the country from multiple points of view.
