Essay: Mothers and Old Friends

Recently I attended the funeral for Mrs. Murphy, the mother of a childhood friend. Her passing took everyone by surprise. And, it was another sober reminder that the parents of Baby Boomers, my generation, are quietly slipping away.

We last saw each other this past summer. My friend Kathleen was in from the East Coast and suggested a lunch date with our moms. We were joined by another childhood friend, Joanie, who had lost her mom a year before.

Two Legislative Committees Grill WEDC

Legislators are looking into a variety of ways to rein in the economic agency, in the wake of a scathing report from the nonpartisan Legislative Audit Bureau

Two legislative panels sunk their teeth into the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. on Thursday. A state audit has revealed evidence that WEDC gave taxpayer money to ineligible recipients and did not properly track loans and grants.

The Joint Finance committee voted to give WEDC $59M in the 2013-14 state budget but nothing in 2014-15 unless it improves.

The Joint Audit committee grilled WEDC executives for more than four hours.

Graduating into Debt

May is a watershed month for graduating college students. Another will approach in six months, when those entering the work world must begin repaying student loans.

Americans carry more student debt than credit card debt, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The UW System calculates the average undergraduate debt at more than $30,000.

Three UWM seniors realize they owe, although none seems sure of how much.
